MPE05 : Anthropomorphic phantoms for optimization of dose and image quality in radiology

A practical challenge to be solved: what can be the role of virtual (phantom based) clinical trials with new technology?

Importance and impact of the training module: Simple mathematical phantoms comprise combination of simple geometrical primitives and as such they are widely used in simulations particularly for dosimetry and optimization of acquisition geometry. Advanced anthropomorphic phantoms with realistic three-dimensional (3D) tissue distribution and anatomical features offer a flexible and simple way to investigate different aspects of 2D and 3D X-ray imaging: to perform accurate dosimetry, to calculate the properties of the simulated projection images and to investigate the effect of acquisition parameters on computer-extracted texture features. One of the aims is to run virtual clinical trials that can study a large series of parameters without actually irradiating a person/patient.

Lead: dr. K. Bliznakova, author of a very realistic 3D breast model and experienced with simulations in general TUV (partner 7).
